A reefer repair call does not begin with a parts order. It begins with the operating complaint, the controller information and enough testing to identify the failed circuit or component. That sequence matters on Thermo King and Carrier trailer units because parts that perform a similar job are not automatically interchangeable across unit families, production years or controller configurations.

Before replacement, the technician relates the complaint to the active operating state, stored alarm history and measured condition of the circuit.
The required evidence depends on the complaint. A no-crank call may require battery, cable, connection and starter-circuit checks. A temperature-control complaint may begin with box conditions, airflow, operating mode and sensor readings. Refrigeration-circuit work requires pressure and temperature observations by qualified personnel using proper equipment. The finding should explain why replacement is justified instead of merely recording that a code was cleared.
Model and serial information controls parts selection
Dispatch should receive clear photographs of the unit data plate, controller display and any readable part identification before sourcing begins. The trailer number and fleet asset number help connect the request to prior service history, but they do not replace the unit model and serial number. If the old component has been superseded, the current replacement must be confirmed through the applicable manufacturer or supplier information.
This identification step prevents several avoidable problems: a physically similar part with the wrong connector, a controller that requires a different configuration, a belt with the wrong length, or a service kit intended for another engine family. Compatibility is confirmed for the specific unit. A photograph of a generic part is not evidence of fitment.

Starting, charging and electrical components
Starting and charging complaints can involve batteries, cables, grounds, fuses, relays, starters, alternators or control wiring. The failed item is not selected by symptom alone. Voltage drop, connection condition and command signals are checked so that a new starter or alternator is not installed into an unresolved cable or control problem. After installation, the unit is started repeatedly and charging behavior is observed under operating load.
Fuel, filtration and engine-support components
Filters, belts, hoses, pumps and related engine-support parts are routine service items, but the surrounding cause still matters. Contamination, leakage, incorrect tension or a damaged mating surface can shorten the life of a replacement. The technician confirms the maintenance history and visible condition, installs the correct part and checks for leaks, alignment and stable operation before release.
Airflow, fan and sensor components
Evaporator and condenser airflow directly affect temperature performance. A fan motor, blade, switch, sensor or wiring fault may interrupt that airflow, while ice, debris or a damaged connector can create a similar complaint. Replacement follows inspection and testing. The final check confirms that airflow and controller readings respond normally in the selected operating mode.
Controllers and operator interfaces
A blank or unreliable display does not automatically require a new controller. Power supply, grounds, connectors and communication paths are checked first. When a controller or display is replaced, configuration and operational checks must match the supported unit. Service records should identify the original complaint, the replacement installed and the verification completed.
Refrigeration-circuit and mechanical components
Compressors, valves and other sealed-system components require a different level of diagnosis and work control. A compressor should not be condemned solely because the box is warm. Airflow, operating mode, refrigerant-circuit observations and the condition of related controls must support the decision. Sealed-system work is performed by qualified technicians, with recovery, leak control and charging procedures appropriate to the equipment and refrigerant.
What can be completed in the field
Mobile replacement is practical when the fault is confirmed, the correct part and tools are available, the unit is accessible and the site provides a safe work area. Fleet yards, loading docks, truck stops and highway service locations present different access limits. Panels need room to open, the technician needs separation from traffic and the trailer must remain stable throughout the work.
A field call may be used to restore operation, make a durable component repair or document why the trailer should be moved. The answer depends on the component, contamination risk, weather, lighting, electrical and refrigerant handling requirements, and the amount of run time needed for verification. The decision is based on the work, not on a blanket promise that every repair is roadside repair.
When shop service is the better route
Shop work is usually the better choice when replacement requires extended access, sealed-system recovery, contamination inspection, component teardown or a controlled runtime test. Intermittent shutdowns may also need enough operating time to repeat after the immediate symptom disappears. A controlled setting makes it easier to observe the unit without working beside traffic or disrupting a customer site.
Moving the work to a shop is not a failure of mobile service. It is a technical and safety decision. Dispatch should be told what was confirmed in the field, whether the unit can run, what cargo-temperature risk remains and what the next facility needs to complete.
Installation is followed by an operating check
Bolting in a part is not the end of the repair. The technician checks connections, mounting, routing, leakage where applicable and the behavior of the repaired system. The unit is then operated in a mode that can demonstrate the original complaint has been addressed. The verification may include repeated starts, charging output, controller input response, stable airflow or temperature-pull-down observations appropriate to the repair.
The service record should connect four points: the reported symptom, the evidence that identified the fault, the component installed and the final operating result. That record gives the fleet a usable release decision and helps the next technician if the complaint returns.
Information to send before dispatch
Provide the unit model and serial number, trailer or asset number, current location, controller photo, active and stored alarms, setpoint, return-air reading and a short description of what happened before the call. If a component has already been removed, include clear photographs of its label, connectors and mounting position. Do not disconnect refrigerant lines or bypass safety devices to obtain those photographs.
For highway calls, include direction of travel, nearest exit or mile marker and whether the trailer is in a protected parking area. For fleet-yard or warehouse work, identify site contact, gate instructions and the number of units involved. This information helps determine whether a stocked service item is likely to resolve the call or whether sourcing and shop time should be planned first.
